The Foundation’s goal is to significantly reduce the incidence of dental disease in Maine by greatly increasing the number of young children (ages 6 months- 3 ½) who receive preventive oral health care.
In 2007, the Foundation created From The First Tooth, a program that integrates evidence-based early childhood caries prevention procedures into routine medical care for children ages 6 months to 3 ½ years of age and their families. The program has been formally endorsed by the Maine Dental Association and has now served over 3,500 children.
Through From The First Tooth, healthcare providers are instructed how to perform an oral health assessment, apply fluoride varnish to children’s teeth and provide oral health education to their parents and caregivers. To learn more about From the First Tooth, please visit www.fromthefirsttooth.org.
